The only advantage of the hunting rifle is the higher fire rate, which could mean that you could get higher DPS at the expense of bullet efficiency but. Also, the sniper used to be bugged such that it was inaccurate unless you used the scope, so it was almost never used because the scope was extremely limiting at medium or short ranges.
Before, it was much more in line with the sniper rifle. The crossbow got a pretty heavy range nerf in a recent update.
